Japanese contemporary textile designers

Fashion Designers. This section has a number of profiles of people who have established themselves in the international fashion world. The number of profiles was getting so big that the page was becoming unwieldy. Thanks to renowned avantgarde designers like Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, Japanese fashion has a reputation for being radical and extreme.

Drawing inspiration from the East and the West, the traditional and the ultramodern, Japans sartorial legacy has made a formidable impact on the Twentynine artists, textile designers, and fashion designers are represented by a selection of one hundred works. Structure and Surface: Contemporary Japanese Textiles Cara McCarty and Matilda McQuaid, 1998 Kristi O'Meara is a painter and graphic designer, as well as being one of the founders of The Patternbase, a textile and design studio in Chicago.

Kristi has also just completed her first publication, The Pattern Base: over 550 contemporary textile and surface designs. In Tokyo, we saw how some remarkable fabrics are transformed by cuttingedge Japanese fashion designers such as the great Issey Miyake (textiles from past seasons shown at left), popular designers at Dover Street Market, and Reiko Sudo at Modern graphic design in Japan may be studied as a synthesis of both Japanese and western movements and styles from Japanese Kano school of painting, to Rimpa, and ukiyoe woodblock prints; together with western styles of Art Nouveau, Constructivism, Bauhaus, futurism, Dada and othres.

We'll spend five days exploring Tokyowith a focus on studio visits to meet contemporary designersfollowed by an indigodyeing retreat in a verdant village outside the city where we'll learn the fundamentals of Report from the" Modern Design Meisen Exhibition" at Anna Leonowens Gallery at NSCAD in Halifax, Canada.
